Wrestling
The Chelsea youth wrestling program provides a local opportunity to introduce Chelsea youth to the sport of wrestling and continue to develop more experienced wrestlers. Our goal through the wrestling experience is to have fun, foster a love of the sport, and develop skills, character, and sportsmanship to create champions both on and off the mat.
Youth wrestling is for boys and girls ages 4-12 (K - 6th grade) and all participants must be registered with Chelsea Parks and Rec prior to the start of the season. There are no team evaluations and all youth wrestlers are on one team together for the season. Wrestlers will practice skills with other teammates of similar age, weight, and skill level. Youth wrestling registration will begin in August/September with the youth season beginning in early November with 2-3 practices a week. Practices will be held at the Chelsea Middle School Auxiliary Gym. Youth practices consist of warmups, wrestling techniques, skills & drills, games, conditioning, and live wrestling to prepare wrestlers for competition.
Our youth wrestling program will compete in local and regional tournaments hosted by the Alabama Youth Wrestling Organization (AWYO) is a chapter under the AAU. Tournaments are Saturdays starting in December and ending with Regional and State tournaments in February. Wrestlers must purchase an AAU wrestler card prior to competing in any tournament during the youth season. Information for each tournament will be posted and wrestlers must register and pay for each tournament individually by the registration deadline. Wrestlers will register to complete in their specific age division and weight bracket to compete with other wrestlers of the same age and weight for each tournament. Tot and Bantam wrestlers (4yrs – 8 yrs) must do on-site weigh-ins during weekly practices prior to each tournament they plan to participate in. Older youth wrestlers will weigh in on-site for each tournament.
Additional information about how to register for and participate in tournaments will be available during Open House and reviewed at the beginning of the season. Swarm Wrestling, which powers the Chelsea Youth Wrestling program offers an additional off-season wrestling program following the youth season.
